I would like to add a .pdf (or any other file or folder) for visitors to download if they would like. How can I do this?

Depending on the content and other things you may consider taking a screen shot of the file and embed the pictures to your website. If that’s not a solution then go on reading...

If you want the download to start when people click on a text link or an image link then you will have to make a zip file.

- iWeb ’08

- iWeb ’06 (iWeb ’08 if linking to a file from different pages)

- Using Gracion Enclose

In iWeb '08

1. Put the file or folder you want to make a zip of on your Desktop

2. Select that file or folder and in the upper menu (or finder bar) go to File and then select "Create Archive” or Compress” (if you have Leopard). You could also download YemuZIP which is a powerful freeware application to make zips.

3. On your desktop a new file will appear named yourfileorfoldername.zip

4. Go into iWeb to the page on which you would like people to be able to download the file you created

5. If you have an image and want people to be able to download the file by clicking the image: select the image, open the inspector and go to the link section, select enable as a hyperlink, in "link to" there's a teardown menu where you select "a file" and select the file you created before.

If you want to have people to click on text follow exactly the same steps but instead of selecting an image select text for making a hyperlink.

6. You're done. When you publish next time the zip file will be published too. You don't have to do anything else, just publish.

When you save iWeb a copy of the zip file will go into the Domain file where iWeb stores all its files so you could then delete the zip from desktop.

You could also link directly to the pdf file without zipping it (using link to 'a file'). Then the pdf would open in the browser and not start downloading. People could then right-click on the link and then "Download linked file as".

So you have to choose whether you want the download starting automatically or not.

iWeb ’06 and in iWeb '08 if linking the same .zip files from several pages

because iWeb would put the same file in several folders (resulting in one file for every page the file is linked to) which uses more megabytes.

1. Put the file or folder you want to make a zip of on your Desktop

2. Select that file or folder and in the upper menu (or finder bar) go to File and then select "Create Archive

3. On your desktop a new file will appear named yourfileorfoldername.zip

4. Make a new folder and call it Downloads or Media or something

5. Put your .zip file into this folder

6. Take the Downloads or Media folder

  1. -For MobileMe go to the Finder menu and select Go/iDisk/My iDisk/ or hit Schift+Command(Apple)+i and then go to /Web/Sites/. Drop your folder created in point 4 into the "Sites" folder.

  2. -If you’re publish to a folder from iWeb place the Downloads or Media folder into the folder you’re publishing to from iWeb. And upload the folder to the root destination of your server using your FTP (same as you always do with your pages)

7. Go to iWeb and make a link to an external page. The URL will be...

http://yoururl/Downloads/yourfileorfoldername.zip

where...

yoururl is web.me.com/username/ if publishing to MobileMe

/Downloads/ is the name of the folder we created in point 4 in which you put the downloadable files

yourfileorfoldername.zip is the  name of the downloadable file

8. When people click on the link the download will start automatically.

Again you could also link directly to the pdf file without zipping it (using normal link). Then the pdf would open in the browser and not start downloading. People could then right-click on the link and then "Download linked file as".

So again you have to choose whether you want the download starting automatically or not.

Using Gracion Enclose

All you have to do is:

1. Put the access data to your MobileMe or any other server

2. Drag&Drop the file into the application and it will automatically be uploaded to your server

3. Copy the url displaying

  1. 4.Go to iWeb, make a link to 'An external page' and paste the link you previously copied

5. That’s it.
